It is a visionary and pioneering design by Ildefons Cerdà in the 19th century, which took traffic and transport into account along with sunlight and ventilation when creating its distinctive octagonal blocks, where the streets widen at each intersection to provide greater visibility and better airflow. Today, the chamfers are used as short-term parking areas, mainly for deliveries and taxis. Its perfectly aligned streets and square blocks with chamfers are one of the city’s most recognizable sights.
