Eixample is characterized by long straight streets, a strict grid pattern crossed by wide avenues, and square blocks with chamfered corners. This was a visionary, pioneering design by Ildefons Cerdà in the 19th century, who considered traffic and transport along with sunlight and ventilation in coming up with his characteristic octagonal blocks, where the streets broaden at every intersection making for greater visibility, better ventilation and, at the time, provided an area for horse-drawn wagons and carriages to easily turn around. Today chamfers are used as short-term parking areas, mainly for deliveries and taxis. Its perfectly aligned streets and the square house blocks with chamfers are one of the most recognizable city views.
